Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Rhodes

Musculoskeletal ultrasound can provide real-time images of selected soft tissues and may support the clinical examination during an orthopaedic consultation.

  • Performed as part of clinical assessment
  • Real-time soft-tissue imaging
  • No ionising radiation
01

What ultrasound may help assess

Depending on the body area and clinical question, ultrasound can help visualise muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and other superficial soft tissues.

  • Selected tendon and muscle injuries
  • Soft-tissue swelling or fluid
  • Movement of certain tendons or joints in real time
  • Comparison with the opposite side when clinically useful
02

Ultrasound is one part of the assessment

The scan does not replace the medical history and physical examination. Some problems are better evaluated with X-ray, MRI, CT or hospital assessment. The appropriate method depends on the suspected injury.

  • Clinical examination comes first
  • Existing imaging can be reviewed
  • Further imaging may still be recommended
  • No test result is interpreted in isolation
03

Preparing for the visit

Wear clothing that allows easy access to the painful area and bring previous reports or imaging. Explain when the symptoms began and what movements make them better or worse.

  • Bring relevant X-rays, MRI scans or reports
  • Know when the symptoms started
  • Mention any recent treatment or medication

Frequently asked questions

Does ultrasound use radiation?

No. Diagnostic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves rather than ionising radiation.

Can ultrasound diagnose every orthopaedic problem?

No. It is useful for selected clinical questions, particularly involving superficial soft tissues. Other imaging may be more appropriate in some cases.

Is the ultrasound a separate appointment?

It may be used during the orthopaedic consultation when clinically appropriate. Confirm the exact arrangement when booking.
